A vacancy has opened on the GAPS Budget Committee. Applications for this volunteer position are now being accepted to complete the three-year term, ending on June 30, 2019.

Applications are due by March 23.

March 12:  Vacancy during new business agenda. Vacancy declared.

March 13:  Vacancy is publicly announced. Applications are available online.

March 23:  Applications due to the District Office.

April 2:  Completed applications are emailed to Board members.

April 9:  Board work session to interview applicants, 5 p.m.

April 9: Regular Board meeting. Board members select new Budget Committee member, 7 p.m.

April 16:  Budget Committee meeting. New committee member participates.

The prep work is nearly done for the major bond-funded construction projects. Planning has included seeking permits, planning for logistics for each site, creating a work timeline and, of course, designing the projects.

Construction work will start as soon as school is out at South Albany High School, West Albany High School, the new elementary school near Timber Ridge, the replacement of Oak Grove Elementary and the middle school vocational/CTE classrooms.

It is an exciting time. We will share more details as the work progresses. Here are design concept videos for each project:

Annual Read Across America events are celebrated in schools around the country in March. Officially on March 2, it is in honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday and a way to encourage and celebrate reading, especially among younger students.

The event is in its 21st year. Typically, it includes Dr. Seuss-themed hats, clothing, guest readers and special lunch menus.

GAPS students will enjoy a special menu on March 2, including Green Eggs and Ham for breakfast and Poodle’s Noodles Macaroni and Cheese for lunch.

Guest readers will host storytime at GAPS elementary schools. This week, Albany firefighters read to GAPS elementary students and OSU student athletes read books to Liberty Elementary students.

Early bird registration ends tomorrow for the annual iRun for Kids fundraiser on March 17. Shirts are guaranteed for participants who register before Feb. 23.

Sometimes we have to close school, delay the start of school, or release early because of bad weather. This is the annual reminder of procedures for school closures or schedule changes due to inclement weather.

When the decision has been made to close school or delay the start, we rely on local radio and television stations for notifications. Closure and delayed start information will ordinarily be broadcast by 6:30 a.m. Closure information will also be posted on the District website.

 Our District subscribes to FlashAlert. This service forwards school closure information to local radio and television stations. Staff, parents, or community members can register to receive these notices directly. Notifications will be sent via email. For those of you with tablets or smart phones, you can also receive messages by downloading the FlashAlert Messenger app. This app is available on Google Play or the iTunes app store. There are no costs to the recipients for using the email or app for notifications.

All addresses registered on FlashAlert will remain confidential. You will receive an email message once per year asking if you wish to continue your subscription and to confirm your email address.  Subscribers should be aware that some email spam filters may prevent messages from being received.
