The boys’ soccer team at South Albany High School are using their skills to give back to their community. The team has launched Futcare, a project to incorporate community service into their team culture.

Their first effort will be on Saturday, Sept. 30, at South Albany Stadium. All proceeds will be donated to Global Giving to benefit victims of Hurricane Harvey and the earthquake in Mexico. All proceeds from these events will be donated to charity.

Several activities are planned:

• Youth soccer clinic for ages 5-12. This bilingual clinic will be coached in partnership with Total Futbol Academy and run from 5:00-6:30. The $10 fee will also cover entry into the men’s leagues
  championship match.
• Men’s leagues championship match. Jalisco (Eugene league champions) vs Villalobos (Salem league champions). $5 entry fee. Match sponsored by the South Albany HS M.E.Ch.A Club.
• High school skills contest sponsored by No Dinx. During halftime of the men’s match local area high school soccer starts will engage in various soccer skills!’
• Refreshments provided by the South Albany Boosters Club and Taco El Machin.

Applications are open for the 2017-18 Albany Public Schools Foundation classroom grants.

Each fall, the Albany Public Schools Foundation accepts grant applications from teachers in the Greater Albany Public School District for innovative programs, tools and supplies supporting enrichment opportunities for students in the areas of art, music, science and health/wellness.

Grants are due on Oct. 13 and applications are open to all GAPS teachers.

Wildfires around the state have affected air quality in our region. Conditions are not expected to improve this week, and the National Weather Service has issued an Air Quality alert through Friday.

We are watching for air quality updates and will announce any changes to school activities and programs based on recommendations from the Oregon Health Authority guidelines for outdoor activities and the Oregon School Activities Association.

Decisions on school closures will be made in consultation with the Linn County Health Department.

• OSAA smoke memo: Sport team practices are governed by OSAA who provide daily heat and air quality directives to our schools.

Today was the first day of school for students in grades 1-6, grade 9 and all students at Timber Ridge. Students in grades 7-8 and 10-12 will return tomorrow.

To welcome elementary students back to school, South Albany High School varsity boys soccer, volleyball, and cheer team members went to Oak Elementary and welcomed back students.
